What is GPS tracking?
Simply put, GPS tracking use a system of satellites orbiting the
Earth to find an approximate location of the receiver with in a few
meters of its actual location. These systems are known for their
accuracy and reliability, and can generally give you an accurate
reading with in a few feet of your position.
Are GPS Tracking Systems Difficult to
use?
If you really do your home work and research the product before you
buy it, then you shouldn't have any difficulty when using your new
system. However, out of the box some GPS Tracking systems can be
more complicated or less complicated than others. Some require a
power cable to be hard wired to the vehicle's power, while others
will run of AA batteries. The key thing that you are looking for in
your GPS Tracking Systems is flexibility and ease of recovery. You
don't want something that is extremely difficult to place or
recover, because it might compromise your ability to gather data |

GPS Tracking Systems
Available
 |
There are two
types of systems available on the market today: passive tracking
systems and real-time systems. A passive unit maintains a record
of every location it has been in a particular vehicle. This
information can then be downloaded onto your computer and viewed
using the manufacturer’s software, which was included with your
tracking unit. Real-time systems allow you to view the unit’s
location whenever you desire. These systems either use a
web-based interface to view the unit’s position (i.e. logging on
to the manufacturer’s website with a username and password given
to you by the manufacturer of the unit) or the manufacturer may
include software for such purposes. |
Cost of GPS Tracking Systems
GPS tracking systems can run anywhere from the low hundreds to a few
thousand dollars. A good quality passive unit will cost
approximately $300 dollars, depending on the options available on
that particular unit. On the other hand, a basic real-time system
will generally start at around $500 dollars. Both real-time and
passive trackers are commonly cellular based systems, which use
cellular towers in the surrounding area to upload data they receive
from satellites. If tracking in a remote area, where cellular
service is not available, is desired, a two-way satellite system
would be necessary. These, however, are much more expensive to
purchase and operate.
